Twelve-faceted barrel and cap, pyramid crowns at both ends, a clean break from the round profiles dominating the American market through the 1920s. Cathay is one of the rarest Doric colorways, on par with Coffee, and this example shows the celluloid at its best: bright pearl weaves running through a deep green ground, no crystallization, the marbled stripes still vivid as the pen turns in light. The Adjustable nib is the Doric's signature, Robert Black's "nine points in one" under patent 1,980,159. A movable slider above the nib slot lets the writer dial five working settings between a locked manifold and a fully released flex. Locked, the nib lays a controlled 0.15mm dry line that resists shock and pressure, the same character clerks and ledger writers used the Doric for through the 1930s. Released, the same nib measures 0.25mm hairlines opening to 2.05mm at 350g Flex pressure, an 8.2× line variation with full snapback and clean tipping. The slider moves smoothly through every notch on this example. Few vintage pens carry this much working range on a single mint nib. Personalized "BR" on the clip, with light scratch marks to the rear of the cap. Faceted edges refinished crisp, sealed under carnauba wax for UV and moisture protection. Ebonite components rejuvenated. Hairline on the cap lip sealed and smoothed. Nib and feed tuned, with the gold patinated into a deep vintage amber. Grade C overall, due to repair and personalization. Fitted with a silicone sac, so please store upright just in case there is nib creep. This is a trade off to use all inks regardless if they are vintage-safe or not, and will not off gas (won't degrade celluloid nitrate). Tested on Rhodia 90gsm ivory with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

https://heronsmooncake.com/products/wahl-eversharp-doric-standard-cathay-green-celluloid-npt-5-adjustable-14k-flex
