J.B. Lucien Safety Pen, French Mottled Ebonite, 14k Gold Semi-Flex Nib
J.B. Lucien Safety Pen, French Mottled Ebonite, 14k Gold Semi-Flex Nib
HM2602014
A fantastic example of French mottled ebonite — the orange-red and black layers produce incredibly playful patterns that run deeper and brighter than their American counterparts, mainly due to formulation differences. Matching mottled ebonite feed, a detail usually reserved for premium model lineups given the extra material cost. Waterman-style rear-pinned safety mechanism. Small maker or promotional pen produced by a larger French house. J.B. Luciens, 33 Rue des Acacias, Paris.
Full safety mechanism rebuild with fresh gaskets that will last decades. Safety pens are easy to clean and can handle any ink types that would otherwise trouble vintage and modern pens — just flush with a pipette (can be included upon request). Approximately 3 hours hands-on. Ebonite rejuvenated and lightly hand-polished — the natural softness restored. Will not feel brittle or prone to cracking. Clip is worn and barrel imprint is weak. Finished with carnauba to protect the ebonite finish; can be re-polished to a shine with soft fabric.
Replacement Wahl Eversharp flexible nib that writes very well. Not the most line variation given that it's a semi-flex, but a very rare and interesting posting-style nib grind that gives amazingly thin and consistent lines. Smooth on all angles. Identifiable as a replacement nib because French pens from this era almost universally carry 18ct nibs unless exported — unlikely here. Nib heat-set and tuned for flex and smoothness.
Tested on Rhodia 90gsm with Diamine Imperial Purple.

Appendix for Listing Details
Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
