A beautiful oversized #6 sized nib that is superbly bouncy and soft. The tines give under ordinary writing weight, so your line breathes a little even when you ask nothing of it, and deliberate pressure swells it to a 4B, close to a 5x spread from the fine unflexed line. The variation is the fun, forgiving kind; it shows up in your signatures, letter closings, and daily pages without any calligraphic technique behind it.
The imprint reads Hundred Year Pen 17. In 1939 Waterman answered the lifetime-guarantee wars of Parker and Sheaffer by warranting this pen for a full century, and molded it in Lucite before any other maker had put that material on a pen. The 17 was the standard nib of the lineup, dwarfed only by the oversize 18. This one is tuned, heat-set, and writing-tested in a black Nikko ebonite JOWO #6 housing, so any modern pen that takes a #6 unit can host it.
Graded C for visible use wear, the imprint worn but legible and the nib original and structurally sound.
Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm A5 paper with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
