Contrast is the point of this custom modified nib. A vintage Montblanc 146 medium reground to a crisp stub, it lays your downstrokes as a true broad while cross strokes hold a fine edge, so every letterform comes out sharply defined. There is real softness under the crispness; press forward with a firm hand and the swell stretches past 1.6mm, better than a 5x range in all.

The gold is 1980s to 1990s monotone 14k, stamped 4810 over Montblanc 585. The 4810 is the summit height of Mont Blanc in meters, cut into the company's nibs since the 1910s, and monotone gold places this one before two-tone became the standard face of the 146. It left the factory a medium and was custom ground to a stub afterward, the cross-stroke edges kept crisp for calligraphic work with enough give in the tines for flexible stub writing.

Flow is set generous to match the grind. In my testing it much prefers wetter, high-viscosity inks, which shade richly through the broad face; drier inks feel underfed at this width. The unit is heat-set in a red Nikko ebonite JOWO #6 housing and writing-tested as an assembly, a straight drop-in for any pen that accepts a #6.

Graded B for light use wear, the imprint crisp and the nib sound; the stub is a documented post-factory grind, not original.

Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm A5 paper with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
