At certain angles this nib resonates on the page, a faint hum up as you write that some well polished modern nibs also exhibit. Even unflexed, the stub grind runs your downstrokes at a full medium while cross strokes hold fine, so everyday writing picks up fantastic subtle variation with no effort at all.
The flex is the smoother surprise. Moderate pressure opens the tines past 1.6mm, better than a 5x spread, and the opening is so even that your flourishes, swash capitals, and long entrance strokes swell without a hitch in the flow.
Stubs of this era were working nibs, made for correspondence hands that wanted shading without snag, and the softly rounded edges forgive rotation far better than a crisp italic. The Ideal on the imprint is older than the nib by half a century; Waterman's first New York operation traded as the Ideal Pen Co. in the 1880s, and the 1884 three-fissure Ideal feed patent is the one the company was built on. This size 5 dates to the 1930s and 1940s, the tail end of American flex production, heat-set over a matched ebonite feed in a black Nikko ebonite JOWO #6 housing and tested as a complete unit.
Graded B, slight wear from use with a legible imprint, original throughout.
Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm A5 paper with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details
Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
