This Canadian Ideal #5 gives you the same flex range every time you ask for it. Unflexed it's a smooth 0.30mm fine, and pressure takes the tines out to 4B at 1.40mm, a spread just under 5x. The flow runs nice and juicy under pressure, or ease up and you get softer, lighter lines with no pressure at all. It's very comfortable to flourish, no surprises anywhere in the range, and it makes a great everyday writer.

CANADA-stamped Ideals came out of the St. Lambert, Quebec plant Waterman opened in 1908, when it sent the New York nibmaker Louis Juster north to run nib production; he stayed superintendent into the 1950s. Canadian nibs built a reputation with collectors for controlled, dependable flex, and that's exactly how this one writes.

B grade, light use wear, the imprint legible and the tines unaltered. The tines were aligned and the tipping smoothed, then the nib went into the red Nikko ebonite JOWO #6 housing, heat-set onto a matched ebonite feed, and came off a full writing test assembled.

Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm White A5 with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
