🔱 Nib: Waterman's Ideal 14 Ct England 5
🖋️ Line Spec: FM/F – 3B | 0.50mm V / 0.30mm H – 1.20mm (4.00x)
🌡️ Flexibility Pressure: 300g Super Flex
📐 Dimensions: 21.82mm nib length past housing
⚖️ Weight: 1.785g

An English Ideal #5 with a soft bouncy full flex that stays controlled all the way out. Unflexed it writes precise, 0.30mm on the cross stroke and 0.50mm on the down stroke, so your plain handwriting picks up a little flourish on its own. Moderate pressure opens the tines to 3B, close to a 4x spread, and the feed runs juicy through the whole cycle. The ceiling is 1.20mm, a constrained full flex, so the swell stays tidy inside normal line spacing and every stroke keeps that soft feeling.

The ENGLAND stamp puts this nib in Waterman's English production, which ran from the mid-1920s under Frank D. Waterman's expansion and had grown into its own model numbering by the 1940s. The 14ct mark is the European carat spelling, the same fineness as an American 14k.

B grade, light wear from use with a clear imprint, nothing structural. Tuned at the bench with the tipping smoothed to a polish, heat-set into the red Nikko ebonite JOWO #6 housing on a matched ebonite feed, then tested writing as a full assembly.

Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm White A5 with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
