Mabie Todd Swan Eternal 44 Mottled GPT, Eternal #4 14ct NY nib
📒 History/Provenance
- Mabie Todd's "Swan Self-Filling Pen" (Lever-Filler) was first introduced in 1920 as a patented "self-locking lever" to prevent accidents where the lever arm catches onto something. It was also during this time that we began to see a greater adoption of mottled hard red rubber being used to make pens by MT&Co. as earlier eyedroppers and safeties were often black or cardinal (red) hard rubber.
- The "Eternal Swan" line up was introduced in Great Britain in 1924, but were almost all made in the New York factory until 1925 where the popularity and management changes moved production over to England. Given the New York made nib, this will date the pen to 1924/early 1925.
🧪 QA & Recommendation
- Beautifully soft Swan Eternal Nib, with some nice line variation up to 0.90mm with moderate pressure, but not suggested to flex as it was not manufactured for extra tensile strength for flexing.
- Extremely smooth great daily writer with very well regulated ink flow, reserse writing around 0.20mm.
- Tested on Rhodia 80gsm A5 pad and Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue ink.
🔧 Restoration Commentary (repairs done, feed/nib adjusted, polishing notes)
- Imprints are extremely crisp and clear, with minty gold plated trim.
- Mottled ebonite rejuvenated and hand polished, "softness" of ebonite restored. Very beautiful mottled ebonite rejuvenated to an incredible condition on color and shine without over polishing.
- Nib heat set and tuned for smoothness

Appendix for Listing Details
Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
