In 1987, Waterman launched the Lady Elsa, a clipless, "flat-top" style fountain pen crafted from vintage 1920s galalith (casein) stock as a tribute to the women in the brand's founding family. This luxurious model featured gold-plated accents, a heart-shaped vent hole on the nib, and was designed specifically for women, utilizing a mini-cartridge filling system.

Despite its influence in paving the way for a variety of successful 1990s female-oriented models like the Lady Agathe, the Lady Elsa remains poorly documented and highly rare today. Its unique material composition and historical naming—honoring Elsa Fagard and Elsa Le Foyer—make it a distinctive piece of Waterman’s heritage.

  • A fantastic slip-cap with a strong seal, and super convenient cartridge swaps as the rear finial is threaded so you can pop it cartridges in without needing to unscrew the nib section, much less risk of ink going everywhere. Very solidly built pen that is primarily brass for all high stress points, very well balanced both uncapped or posted at 141.58mm (the rear finial is recessed for this reason).
  • The gold-plated nib is incredibly soft and smooth, perfect for everyday writing. another fun fact is that it fits perfectly in most hobonichi cover pockets, I tested on my Roterfaden A5, ymmv.
  • Includes leather pouch and Waterman short ink cartridges

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
