Waterman's 52 Solid 9k Gold Cap Band & Barrel Band, 18k Gold-Filled Cap Clip, #2 CAN nib
📒 History/Provenance
- An ornate Canadian pen exported to London in 1934.
- Decorated with an incredible amount of gold plate and solid bands with 18k filled clip on the cap, solid 9k gold cap band, and a solid 9k gold barrel band.
- Personalized with an emblem that looks like "ACO"
- FDW (frank d. waterman) 9ct 0.375 London Assay Office gold stamps from 1934, given the italic "t" and Leopard's head.
🧪 QA & Recommendation
- A great fine, borderline fine medium nib, with very controlled flex and perfect snapback, needs light to moderate pressure to flex to 2.0mm lines on the downstroke. Incredibly beautiful hairlines on the cross stroke and even upstrokes.
- Surprisingly it performs more similarly to a cursive italic when writing as it lays a very smooth downstroke with a nice crisp side stroke that is a lot more expressive than a normal F grind.
- Great nib for beginners and intermediate calligraphers alike.
🔧 Restoration Commentary
- Ebonite rejuvenated and lightly polished, "softness" of ebonite restored.
- Chasing and model imprint is well worn but hallmark imprints are fair.
- Gold trim polished lightly

Appendix for Listing Details
Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
