A Waterman's #4 in 14k gold from the New York factory. L.E. Waterman started in New York in 1884 and built the brand on the "Ideal" imprint and a patented three-fissure feed. This #4 was a factory fit on the 14, 24, 44, and 54. Early New York 4's run longer in the tine than later production and write softer for it. This one tracks close to the 1927 #7 Pink in feel, with tight hairlines and a clean, well-defined return.
It is one of the softer 4's I've tuned. At 280g it sits in Semi Brush Flex, a 0.20mm hairline stretching to 1.30mm for a 6.5x range, and those fine 0.20mm strokes are the point of it, among the finest on a flex nib of this size and clean enough for delicate flourishing. The tines come back tightly controlled, without bounce. Flex engages on light pressure; lean on it harder and the tipping can bite the paper, so it writes as a finesse nib.
Tine alignment was corrected and the tipping smoothed to sharpen the return. Seated in Nikko red ebonite on a JOWO #6 ebonite feed. B+, with light honest use and no prior repairs. A drier ink such as Pelikan 4001 crisps up the fine strokes further.
Tested on Rhodia 80gsm with Waterman Serenity Blue.

Appendix for Listing Details
Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.
All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.
Line Variation Standard
Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.
Flexibility Standard
Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
