Solid sterling silver, hand-engraved with pansies, on Waterman's smallest overlay pen. The florals are cut into the silver itself, and the overlay has survived in amazing condition.

The nib is smooth and easy to flex, about perfect for a first vintage flex pen. Unflexed you get a fine line; moderate pressure opens it better than 5x to a 6B swell. The nib unit was tuned at the bench so the feed keeps pace with the spread, and you won't outrun the ink.

The 4 at the front of 452½ V is what separates sterling from the gold pens, whose codes led with a 0 instead: after it come 5 for lever, 2 for the nib size, then ½ for slender and V for vest-pocket. Waterman engraved the Pansy florals by hand through the 1910s and into the twenties.

Graded B with the sterling in amazing shape. Service closes with a fresh silicone sac, and from there any ink is on the table; store it nib-up between fills.

Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm White with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
