The Waterman 56 is the mature commercial American pen of the 1920s: large lever-filler, #6 nib, black hard rubber, gold-plated trim, the model that sat on insurance brokers' and bookkeepers' desks across the United States for a decade. The cicada accommodation clip is the period detail that works very well with this model spec. This example wears that clip cleanly, paired with double floral filigree barrel bands that match exceptionally well against the ebonite barrel. The barrel hallmark imprint is worn but legible, and the chasing pattern holds where it has not been worn smooth from use. The Account stamp marks the configuration: a firm, controlled #6 with an architect grind tuned to lay 0.30mm horizontal strokes and 0.25mm vertical strokes for a 1.2× variation in the EF range. Wide horizontal, narrow vertical, with the cross-stroke variation amplified at an oblique writing angle. Accountants and ledger writers used these for daily ten-hour shifts; the same nib serves a modern journaler or notetaker who values a precise, controlled, durable line with subtle stroke contrast built in. Substantial in the hand, with a girthy 9.46mm grip and a 143mm capped length. Grade C+. Three hours of ebonite restoration brought the BHR back to a deep finish, and the double floral filigree barrel bands came through clean. Ebonite rejuvenated and hand-polished, "softness" restored. Fresh latex sac. Nib heat-set and tuned. Tested on Rhodia 90gsm ivory with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.
