A crisp stub that's also a soft flex, on one #2 nib. Unflexed it writes true stub contrast, 0.60mm verticals against 0.15mm hairline cross strokes, with edges clean enough that letterforms hold their shape. Press and the downstroke runs out to a 5B line, an 11x spread end to end that stays soft through the whole range; you can write compact stub text all day and open it up for a signature.

The base pen is a US-made 92 in marbled grey celluloid, converted by Jif-Waterman for the glass-cartridge program the French arm started in 1936. In the model code, 9 marks the slender celluloid series Waterman introduced around 1932 and 2 marks the nib size; the longer cartridge pens were built on it. Nishimura counts the JiF program as the start of the modern cartridge era, glass cartridges in 65mm and 52mm lengths, sealed with a cork stopper the feed tail pushes open.

There's no sac inside and nothing organic to age in the barrel; flushing the system through is super quick, and any ink is safe in it. Graded B, all parts original and extremely mint, the grey marble's color perfect where celluloid this age usually ambers.

Tested on Tomoe River 68gsm White with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black.

Appendix for Listing Details

Sweating the details is fundamental to understanding, appreciating, and knowing the peice of history you have in your hands.

All pens are filled and tested, not just dipped in ink, which does not reflect writing characteristics whatsoever.

Line Variation Standard

Different restorers have different standards for line sizing and especially for vintage pens, the printed tipping size will not always be accurate due to repairs/grinds/etc. Please use this as a frame of reference for consistency.

Flexibility Standard

Nib flexibility is such a controversial topic, but there needs to be some level of consistency so please take this table as a frame of reference for my restorations and as someone who is writing in a calligraphic/spencerian style of cursive script. Without objective measurements, flexibility terms such as wet noodle are useless as someone with stronger forearms and grip strength will make even manifold nibs into a wet noodle.

Restoration Ratings
